What to Wear in Oman: A Practical Guide for Women and Men

One of the most common questions I get from first-time visitors is what they should wear in Oman.

The answer is simpler than many people expect.

Oman is a welcoming country, and visitors are not expected to dress exactly like Omanis. At the same time, modest clothing is appreciated, especially in villages, souqs, religious sites and more traditional areas.

You do not need to overthink every outfit. A good rule is to dress comfortably, cover a little more than you might at a beach resort, and pay attention to where you are going that day.

The biggest mistake I see is not usually that someone is dressed “wrong.” It is that they packed only for heat and forgot about mountains, swimming, hiking or mosque visits.

What should women wear in Oman?

For normal sightseeing, I recommend lightweight clothing that covers the shoulders and knees.

Loose trousers, long skirts, maxi dresses, linen shirts and breathable tops all work well.

You do not need to wear an abaya or cover your hair for everyday travel.

A scarf is still useful to keep in your bag because you may need it when visiting a mosque, and it can also help with sun or wind.

For a day in Muscat, something simple like loose trousers with a lightweight shirt is perfectly comfortable.

If you are joining our Muscat: Heritage & the Sea, I would especially recommend dressing modestly because the day may include the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque as well as other cultural areas.

What should men wear in Oman?

For men, lightweight trousers or longer shorts with a T-shirt, polo or shirt work well in most situations.

In cities and tourist areas, shorts are common among visitors, but I would avoid very short shorts when visiting traditional villages, mosques or formal cultural sites.

For mosque visits, men should wear clothing that covers the shoulders and knees.

Long lightweight trousers are often the easiest option because they work almost everywhere.

Do women need to cover their hair?

Not during normal sightseeing.

Women do not need to cover their hair while walking around Muscat, visiting forts, eating at restaurants or traveling through Oman.

A headscarf is required at some mosques, including the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque.

I recommend carrying one with you on a cultural sightseeing day so you are prepared without having to think about it later.

What should you wear to Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque?

The dress rules at the Grand Mosque are more specific than general sightseeing.

Women should wear loose clothing covering their arms and legs, and their hair should be covered.

Men should also have their shoulders and knees covered.

Avoid transparent clothing or very tight clothing.

If the mosque is part of your itinerary, dress for it before leaving the hotel rather than planning to change somewhere later.

That makes the morning much easier.

Can you wear shorts in Oman?

Yes, but it depends on where you are.

Around hotels, beaches and casual tourist areas, shorts are generally fine.

For cultural sightseeing, villages, mosques and more traditional communities, I recommend longer clothing.

I usually tell guests to think about context rather than trying to memorize a strict rule.

What works at a beach resort may not be what I would choose for Nizwa Souq.

What should you wear in Nizwa?

Nizwa is more traditional than many areas of Muscat, so I recommend modest clothing.

Lightweight trousers, long skirts and tops covering the shoulders are good choices.

You may also be visiting the fort, souq and surrounding villages, so comfortable walking shoes are important.

If your itinerary combines Nizwa with the mountains on our Nizwa & Jebel Akhdar, bring an extra layer as well.

The temperature can drop significantly once you begin climbing into the mountains.

What should you wear in Jebel Akhdar or Jebel Shams?

This is where many visitors get caught by surprise.

They leave Muscat in warm weather dressed for the heat, then arrive in the mountains and suddenly feel cold.

From November through March, I recommend carrying a light jacket or warm layer.

If you are staying overnight, bring something warmer.

The wind and elevation can make evenings much cooler than the coast.

For walking in the villages or around viewpoints, wear comfortable shoes with good grip.

If you are doing a more active mountain day such as Jebel Shams and Misfat Al Abriyeen, I would choose proper walking shoes rather than sandals.

What should you wear to a wadi?

Wadi clothing needs to work for both walking and swimming.

For Wadi Shab, you will be hiking before you swim, so I recommend lightweight athletic clothing that dries quickly.

Good footwear matters more than fashion here.

Wear shoes you are comfortable walking in over rocks and uneven ground.

Flip-flops are not what I would choose for the hike.

For swimming, modest swimwear is appreciated.

Women often feel most comfortable in swim leggings, shorts with a swim top, or another style that provides a little more coverage.

Men can wear standard swim shorts.

Our Wadi Shab & Bimmah Sinkhole is an active day, so I always recommend bringing a dry change of clothes as well.

What should you wear at Wadi Bani Khalid?

Wadi Bani Khalid is easier to access than Wadi Shab, but the same general advice applies.

Wear something comfortable in the heat and suitable for swimming.

Because local families may also be visiting the pools, modest swimwear is a respectful choice.

If you are combining the wadi with our Wadi Bani Khalid & Sharqiya Sands, also think about the desert.

A light overshirt or long trousers can be useful later in the day.

What should you wear in the desert?

During the day, lightweight and breathable clothing is best.

Loose long sleeves can actually be more comfortable than very exposed skin because they protect you from the sun.

A hat, sunglasses and sunscreen are important.

At night, the desert can become much cooler, especially in winter.

If you are staying overnight on A Night in the Sharqiya Sands, bring a warm layer from November through March.

You will appreciate it once the sun goes down.

Closed shoes or sandals both work around camp, although shoes are better if you plan to walk farther into the dunes.

What should you wear at the beach?

At resort beaches and hotel pools, standard swimwear is normal.

At public beaches, I recommend a little more coverage.

For women, a swimsuit with a cover-up is an easy option.

For men, normal swim shorts are fine.

If you are walking back through a public area or stopping somewhere afterward, cover up before leaving the beach.

This is less about strict rules and more about being considerate of the setting.

What should you wear on a boat or snorkeling trip?

For a trip to the Daymaniyat Islands, wear swimwear under lightweight clothing and bring a dry layer for afterward.

A rash guard is useful because it protects against the sun and gives extra coverage while snorkeling.

Bring:

  • swimwear
  • rash guard or lightweight shirt
  • hat
  • sunglasses
  • sunscreen
  • sandals or easy shoes
  • dry change of clothes

For our Daymaniyat Islands Snorkeling Cruise, I would avoid bringing anything too formal or difficult to change out of.

A simple beach and boat outfit is best.

What shoes should you bring to Oman?

For most travelers, I recommend bringing at least two types of shoes.

One comfortable everyday pair for cities, forts and souqs.

One pair suitable for hiking, wadis or mountain walking.

You do not need heavy hiking boots for every trip.

Good trainers or trail shoes are enough for many normal sightseeing routes.

If your itinerary includes technical canyoning or more serious hiking, then footwear becomes more important.

For something like our Snake Canyon Canyoning Expedition, wear what the activity requirements recommend rather than using ordinary sightseeing shoes.

What fabrics work best in Oman?

Lightweight natural or breathable fabrics are ideal.

Linen, cotton and moisture-wicking fabrics all work well.

I would avoid heavy jeans during the hotter months if you plan to spend much of the day outside.

Loose clothing usually feels more comfortable than tight clothing in the heat.

In winter, you can still wear lightweight fabrics during the day, but carry a jacket for the mountains or desert evenings.

What colors should you wear?

There are no special color rules for visitors.

Light colors are often more comfortable in the sun.

White, beige, tan, light blue and other pale colors are practical for daytime.

If you are going into the desert, remember that very light clothing can show dust easily.

Wear what you are comfortable in.

What should you avoid wearing?

I would avoid very revealing clothing in public places.

That includes very short shorts, low-cut tops or clothing that is extremely tight or transparent.

You may see other tourists wearing these things in some areas, but that does not necessarily mean it is the most respectful choice.

I would also avoid clothing with offensive slogans or imagery.

Other than that, Oman is quite easy to dress for.

What should you pack for Oman in winter?

From November through March, I recommend:

  • lightweight daytime clothing
  • long trousers or skirts
  • breathable shirts
  • modest clothing for cultural sites
  • scarf for women visiting mosques
  • comfortable walking shoes
  • swimwear
  • sun hat
  • sunglasses
  • sunscreen
  • light jacket
  • warmer layer for mountains or desert nights

This surprises people who imagine they are packing only for heat.

What should you pack for Oman in summer?

From May through September, focus more heavily on heat protection.

Bring:

  • very lightweight breathable clothing
  • loose long sleeves
  • sun hat
  • high-SPF sunscreen
  • sunglasses
  • refillable water bottle
  • comfortable sandals or walking shoes
  • swimwear
  • light scarf or cover-up

Even in summer, keep something modest enough for mosques and traditional areas.

What should you wear during Ramadan?

The general modest-dress advice becomes even more important during Ramadan.

Visitors are welcome, but this is a religious month and public behavior is more conservative during the daytime.

Dress respectfully, especially around mosques and local communities.

Also remember that eating, drinking and smoking in public during daylight hours are restricted during Ramadan.

Do you need traditional Omani clothing?

No.

Visitors are not expected to wear a dishdasha, abaya or other traditional Omani clothing.

If you are invited to wear traditional clothing in an appropriate cultural setting, that can be a nice experience, but it is not necessary for normal travel.

The most respectful thing you can do is dress modestly and comfortably while still being yourself.

My advice

Do not pack for Oman as if every day will have the same weather or activity.

A Muscat sightseeing day, a wadi hike, a night in the desert and a visit to Jebel Akhdar require very different clothing.

The easiest approach is to pack lightweight layers.

That gives you flexibility without carrying too much.

And if you are ever unsure, choose the slightly more modest option.

You will almost always feel comfortable, and you will never feel out of place.
