October is one of my favorite months to recommend for Oman.

The intense summer heat is beginning to ease, the main winter rush has not fully arrived and the water in the wadis can still feel warmer than it does later in the season.

It is a shoulder month, but in Oman that can be a very good thing.

What is the weather like in October?

Muscat and the lowlands are still warm, especially in the middle of the day, but mornings and evenings begin to feel more comfortable.

The mountains are noticeably cooler, and desert evenings become easier to enjoy.

Is October too hot?

Not for most travelers if you plan the day sensibly.

Long midday hikes can still feel hot, so I would start active days early.

By late afternoon, conditions are usually much more pleasant than they are in July or August.

Why is October good for wadis?

This is one of the biggest advantages.

By mid-winter, some visitors find wadi water surprisingly cool.

In October, the air is beginning to improve while the water can still retain more summer warmth.

That makes places such as Wadi Shab especially enjoyable.

Our Wadi Shab & Bimmah Sinkhole is a strong October day if you start early.

What are the mountains like?

October is excellent for Jebel Akhdar and Jebel Shams.

The higher elevation gives you cooler air, and hiking becomes easier than in the peak summer months.

You may still want a light layer for evening or overnight stays.

Is the desert comfortable?

Much more than in summer.

October is when Sharqiya Sands begins feeling like a true overnight destination again rather than somewhere you must work around extreme daytime heat.

Sunset and early morning are especially good.

A Night in the Sharqiya Sands fits the month very well.

What about Muscat?

Muscat is still warm during the day, but sightseeing becomes easier.

I would visit the Grand Mosque early, use midday for lunch or indoor stops and enjoy Muttrah in the evening.

Is October crowded?

Usually less than the peak November-to-March travel period.

That can mean more flexibility with hotels and a calmer feel at popular attractions.

Weekends and holidays can still bring crowds to wadis and Nizwa.

Can you snorkel in October?

Yes.

The Daymaniyat Islands are a good addition to an October trip, especially if you want one day that is completely different from the road trip.

Our Daymaniyat Islands Snorkeling Cruise is an easy half-day option from Muscat.

What should you pack?

  • lightweight clothing
  • modest layers for cultural sites
  • swimwear
  • good walking shoes
  • hat and sunscreen
  • light jacket for mountains or desert evenings

October or November?

Choose October if warmer water and slightly quieter travel matter more to you.

Choose November if you prefer cooler daytime conditions across the whole route.

Both are excellent.

My advice

If you want a balanced first trip with wadis, mountains, desert and Muscat, October is one of the easiest months to recommend.

You still get warmth, but the country is beginning to feel ready for the main outdoor travel season.
