April is one of the most interesting months to visit northern Oman because it sits between the cooler winter season and the hotter summer period.
For me, the biggest reason to consider April is Jebel Akhdar.
This is when the mountain's rose harvest can become part of the experience.
What is Oman weather like in April?
Muscat and the interior are warm, and the middle of the day can feel hot.
Mornings and evenings are still comfortable, and the mountains remain noticeably cooler.
This is a month when timing starts to matter more than it did in January or February.
Why visit Jebel Akhdar in April?
April is associated with the Damask rose harvest in Jebel Akhdar.
Families pick roses early in the morning and use them to produce traditional Omani rose water.
The season varies slightly from year to year, but spring is the time to plan for it.
Our Jebel Akhdar: Villages & Mountain Views is a natural fit if you want more than a quick viewpoint stop.
Is April good for hiking?
Yes, especially in the mountains, but start earlier as the month becomes warmer.
Jebel Shams can still be excellent for the Balcony Walk.
Bring plenty of water and do not treat midday like winter conditions.
What are the wadis like?
April is very good for swimming.
The air is warmer than in winter, and the water can feel more inviting.
For Wadi Shab, an early start is important because the approach hike becomes hotter.
Wadi Shab & Bimmah Sinkhole works well if you make the wadi the main activity of the day.
Is April good for the desert?
Yes, especially earlier in the month.
Sharqiya Sands is still enjoyable at sunset and in the morning, but daytime temperatures are rising.
Plan desert time around late afternoon, evening and early morning rather than long exposed midday activities.
What about Muscat?
Muscat sightseeing is still very manageable.
Visit outdoor cultural sites in the morning, take a slower lunch period and return to Muttrah or the waterfront later in the day.
Is April crowded?
Usually less than the middle of the winter peak season, although Easter and school-holiday periods can affect demand.
Mountain accommodation can still book quickly because of rose season.
What should you pack?
- lightweight breathable clothing
- comfortable walking shoes
- swimwear
- hat and sunscreen
- scarf for mosque visits
- light layer for mountain evenings
April or March?
March is usually cooler.
April gives you stronger rose-season potential and warmer swimming conditions.
If rose harvesting is a priority, April is the month I would watch most closely.
April or October?
Both are strong shoulder-season months.
October is excellent after summer, while April feels like the last comfortable stretch before the hotter months build.
Choose April for roses. Choose October if you want warmer post-summer wadi water and cooler weather arriving rather than leaving.
My advice
April works best when you build the itinerary around mornings and the mountains.
Start early, leave space for rose-season experiences and enjoy the wadis before summer heat becomes the dominant factor.
