The road from Muscat to Sur is one of the best drives to build into a first Oman trip.
You move from the capital into open coastline, wadis, fishing villages and beaches, with enough stops that the journey becomes an experience rather than simply a transfer.
If you have the time, I recommend treating this as a full day and sleeping in Sur instead of rushing there as quickly as possible.
How long is the drive from Muscat to Sur?
Without long stops, the drive is manageable in a few hours. But if you want to enjoy the coast properly, give yourself most of the day.
The most popular route follows the coast and works naturally with Bimmah Sinkhole, Wadi Shab, Tiwi and Fins.
Stop 1: Bimmah Sinkhole
Bimmah is an easy first stop from Muscat and does not require a long hike.
The turquoise water and limestone setting make it a good introduction to the coastal landscape.
You do not need to spend hours here. A shorter visit works well before continuing east.
Stop 2: Wadi Shab
Wadi Shab should be the main activity of the day if you include it.
The experience involves a short boat crossing, hiking and swimming, so allow several hours rather than treating it like a roadside viewpoint.
Our Wadi Shab & Bimmah Sinkhole follows this classic coastal combination.
What should you know before Wadi Shab?
Start early, wear proper shoes and carry enough water.
If you want to reach the hidden waterfall, you need to be comfortable swimming.
During warmer months, the hike can feel much harder in the middle of the day.
Stop 3: Fins
Fins gives you a quieter coastal break after an active wadi visit.
The pale beaches and open sea create a very different atmosphere from the canyon.
If you are not doing Wadi Shab, Fins can become a longer stop for a picnic, swim or relaxed beach time.
Stop 4: Tiwi
Tiwi is worth noticing even if you do not spend hours there.
The area around Wadi Tiwi has villages, palms and mountain scenery that feel more lived-in than the more famous Wadi Shab route.
If you have extra time, this is where I would slow down.
Should you add Wadi Al Arbaeen?
Not on the same day as Wadi Shab if you want to enjoy either one properly.
Wadi Al Arbaeen is better as an alternative coastal day.
Our Wadi Al Arbaeen and the Fins Coast works well for travelers who want a different route from the standard Wadi Shab day.
What is Sur like?
Sur is one of Oman's historic maritime towns and a logical overnight stop.
Spend time around the corniche and dhow-building area rather than using the town only as a place to sleep.
After a full coastal day, the slower atmosphere is welcome.
Should you drive back to Muscat the same day?
You can, but I usually would not if Sur is part of a wider road trip.
Staying overnight lets you continue toward Sharqiya Sands, Ras Al Jinz or other eastern Oman destinations without unnecessary backtracking.
Can you do the route in reverse?
Yes.
Sur to Muscat works equally well, especially if you are coming from the desert.
In that direction, I still recommend starting early enough to give Wadi Shab proper time.
What car do you need?
A normal rental car is sufficient for the main Muscat-to-Sur coastal highway and the standard access points for Bimmah and Wadi Shab.
If you plan to explore rougher side tracks or remote wadi roads, check the exact conditions first.
Best time of year
October through April is the easiest period for a full outdoor day.
In summer, start very early and reduce the number of exposed outdoor stops.
My advice
Do not race from Muscat to Sur just because navigation says the drive is short enough.
The coast is the point.
Choose one major activity, add a few simple stops and arrive in Sur with enough energy to enjoy the evening.
